The vocal minority opposed to the proposed shopping center at Golden Gate and Wilson boulevards argues that it should not be built because it violated the comprehensive plan.
Well, things and people change. Comprehensive plans are intended to manage growth in a particular area. As growth increases and the population shifts, plans change to reflect the times.
The Golden Gate Area Master Plan has been changed several times, most recently in 2004. To do so, you must demonstrate need for the change. The developer of this project has shown the need.
Golden Gate Estates has grown from a mostly rural community into a bedroom, suburban area of Naples. There are many more families and retirees who don’t want to drive 10-plus miles to shop. This shopping center would be an asset to the Estates.
I encourage residents to vote yes on Nov. 2 to allow this proposal to move forward and fulfill the basic needs of everyone.
